At the end of their training as pilot, machine gunner, radio operator and bomber officer, ten men will form a bomber crew aboard a B17 Flying Fortress. It is in Grafton Underwood (United Kingdom), home of the 384th Bomb Group, that the crew will take possession of a B17 nicknamed The Joker. During the mission of April 13, 1944, seriously damaged during the attack before Schweinfurt (Germany), the aviators had to parachute. In Bérismenil (Belgium), The Joker hits the “Les Crestelles” hill. In the wreckage is the body of James H. Young, who instantly became the son of the village.
An odyssey begins for the crew made up of fears, encounters with resistance fighters and traitors, solitude or with other aviators, arrests, prison camps, lack of hygiene, malnutrition, deaths, escape to Switzerland, death march before the long-awaited liberation. From the USA, via Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, France, Poland and Switzerland before returning home.
